I am thoroughly enjoying my Sheaffer Calligraphy Deluxe Tin Kit. I like the style of the pens - very elegant (they are not the kind you can stick in your pocket - no clip on them). The flow of ink is very smooth and consistent. Not only does the kit have 3 sizes of knibs (fine-medium-broad), it also includes a holder (bottom of the pen) for each knib, so you don't have to remove one knib to use another. In fact, I liked this set so well, I ordered a second kit - so I now have one for home use and one to take with me when I leave home. I highly recommend them for everyday use.

 Sheaffer Calligraphy Deluxe Tin Kit - One of Two Nice Gift, Starter or Practice SetsDec 12, 2008
The Sheaffer Calligraphy Deluxe Tin Kit (SH/10033) is a very nice starter set of calligraphy pens. Three pens are included in a decorative tin along with a piston converter, 6 ink cartridges and 3 replaceable tips. There are also an included instruction leaflet but beginners would definitely need a good book to go along with this set.
The tin comes in a plastic sleeve that appears to be designed for retail presentation. Some of the dust from the inside packaging seems to have spread around inside the container. So when you get it you have to clean the pens off and then you can use the top of the decorative tin to close the kit and keep the dust to a minimum.
These are definitely not the kinds of pens I would recommend for portable use, but they work great for practicing at your home. The included inks are basically enough to get you started but you are going to want to get more.
The Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxi Kit (SH/73404) has a lot more included and the price tends to fluctuate a lot. At the time I got this set, the maxi set cost twice as much. Now it's actually selling for a little less. Either of these sets are great beginner or practice sets, so I would recommend people buy whichever set is priced lower at the moment.
CONCLUSION
This is a great gift for somebody interested in calligraphy or art in general. If you need a nice set to practice with, even an experienced calligrapher can get some good value out of this set. Definitely compare this set to the Maxi set which includes much more. Depending on the current pricing, pick the one that's the best value.
